Imagine
it's Christmas or New Year's, Valentines Day or Easter and you're 8,000 miles
from your home in the USA hunkered down in dangerous, hostile territory. Then,
you get a package full of goodies and personal products from your hometown. And
for that brief period of time, the war in Afghanistan becomes the last thing on
your mind. That is precisely what Mrs. Cynthia Sherman, a member of St. Nicholas
Catholic Church in Millville NJ is doing with help from her friends in the
Sisterhood. She had the idea to send the soldiers so-called "care" packages, and
ran the idea past Fr. Ivan Turyk, the Parish Administrator of the parish. Fr.
Ivan and parishioners liked the idea and with the help of donations of supplies
and money donated for postage, 5 large boxes have already been shipped to
Afghanistan. The items sent included socks, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, coffee
and drink mixes, batteries, chopstick, gum, and lots of crackers and other
snacks. Tammy Commander made 30 individual bags of homemade cookies, each with 6
cookies and "thank you" written on the bag. We also had put thank you letters
into the packages from the members of the church, and cards that were made by
elementary school students of one of our parishioners. In two weeks, as we
celebrate Easter and remember the sacrifice Our Lord made for us, let’s also
remember our troops, for what they do for us. Pray for God to keep watch over
them and to return them home to us safely, so they may be able to enjoy life as
we do.
